About Me

I have been working at Cockermouth School as a Learning Mentor part time for 23 years and am now the school counsellor. I am based one day a week at The Treatment Room in Cockermouth offering hypnotherapy, person centred counselling and Reiki healing too.

I am delighted to be part of the Cumbria Therapies team and am available for hypnotherapy sessions for a wide range of issues including fears and phobias, anxiety, self-esteem and confidence. I also offer person centred counselling and reiki healing to assist in promoting wellbeing for clients.

I also teach fitness classes at the sports centre in Cockermouth and see this very much as part of a holistic approach to positive mental health and well being.

My aim is to help people feel as relaxed as possible when talking about often very difficult or sensitive issues.

I look forward to branching out into the Carlisle area and welcome any questions about my practice in order to help potential clients feel comfortable prior to their session.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy can be used to bring about changes in the way that we think and respond to various situations. I use hypnotherapy as a tool to induce a deep state of relaxation which allows access to the subconscious mind. During this natural state of relaxation, the subconscious mind becomes more open and receptive to new ideas, thought patterns and suggestions of change.

What does it involve?

There will be an initial consultation offered to the client to see what the issues are and enable me to gain a greater understanding. The information gathered will be confidential but any safeguarding and medical concerns will need to be discussed honestly to ensure both client and therapist safety.

Once the consultation has taken place then a session will be arranged where the client will sit or lay comfortably and be guided into a pleasant and relaxing state known as a hypnotic trance. Once in this pleasant state, I will use suggestions, words and phrases to help the client develop a more helpful set of beliefs. Sometimes people remember all or nothing that has been said but they will never be made to say or do anything that they do not want to do. The client is always in control.

What are the benefits?

It is a relaxing therapy that is now well accepted as an alternative therapy. It is used to address such issues as phobias, teeth grinding, smoking cessation, anxiety and weight loss. The number of sessions will depend on the person themselves, the nature of their issue and their responsiveness to the hypnotherapy. All these issues are discussed during the consultation.

Remember that hypnotherapy cannot force you to do anything you don’t want to do. This is why hypnotherapy will only succeed if you really want it to.

Reiki is a therapy often described as palm healing or hands-on-body healing in which a practitioner places hands lightly on or over a patient’s body to facilitate the patient’s process of healing.

Reiki combines the Japanese and Chinese word-characters of “rei” (spiritual or supernatural) and “ki” (vital energy). One of the basic ideas held by those who practice Reiki is that this vital energy can be channeled to support the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Reiki is extremely relaxing and can be used on its own or as part of a hypnotherapy treatment.

What is Person Centred Counselling?

When you’re attending counselling sessions with a person-centred counsellor, you’ll be encouraged to bring your own issues to the session – the counselling is led by you and not directed by the counsellor.

Many clients, with no prior knowledge of counselling, believe that the counsellor will sort their problems out for them. A person-centred counsellor will help you to explore your own issues, feelings, beliefs, behaviour, and worldview, so you can become more self-aware and achieve greater independence.
