Indian Head Massage - Overview

Indian head massage (champissage) originates from the traditional Ayurvedic medicine of India. It was first used to keep the hair healthy.

A deeper interpretation suggests that Indian style head massage also offers the opportunity to get in touch with the healing potential within the individuals inner being. This empowers the recipient to ensure their own well-being.

The body’s natural balance is addressed and an Indian head massage will leave you with a great feeling of inner peace and clarity. It is said to aid the emotions and disorders of a spiritual nature such as indifference, lack of purpose and long term anxiety.

How it may help
A massage is designed to relieve pain, ease tense or tight muscles, improve circulation and benefits the body in many other ways. Designed to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and the release of toxins from the muscles, the massage is beneficial for people with chronically overworked and painful muscles.

Contraindications
Please be aware that Indian Head Massage is contra-indicated in some conditions, for example, high blood pressure. The therapist will be happy to discuss this with you and advise you on where to go for more appropriate treatment if this is indicated.

If you are having any medical treatment when you visit it is useful to let your doctor know that you have decided to have Indian Head Massage so you receive the best care from everyone. The Centre will send a letter to your GP after the first consultation but this will only be done with your full permission.

A typical session

This is a very relaxing massage of the muscle covering the head, found to help with stress, anxiety and other problems. It uses deep thumb and finger pressure, friction, as well as a soothing laying on of hands. The shoulders, neck, arms, scalp and face are all included in the massage. This helps reduce muscular and nervous tension as well as improving the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid. Cells become fully oxygenated. Physical and emotional toxins are flushed out. The tissues of the neck and the shoulders are stretched and mobilised. Scalp circulation is stimulated and it is this that can improve the strength and texture growth of hair.

The massage also relaxes the scalp and tones subcutaneous muscles, helping to relieve eye strain, headaches and to focus concentration.

The first session will be around 1 - 1.5 hrs long to allow for a detailed case history to be taken.  Subsequent sessions are 1 hour long.  You will be positioned either on a chair or a couch for different parts of the massage.  Only the area being treated will be exposed otherwise you will be covered with towels.

After the treatment you will be encouraged to drink more water for the next 24 hour to encourage detoxification and rebalancing.  During this time it is recommended that you avoid alcohol, tobacco and caffeine.

Cost / Number of sessions
Two to three treatments are recommended initially followed by further sessions at an agreed interval to maintain balance.
