Indian Head Massage - Overview

Indian head massage (champissage) originates from the traditional Ayurvedic medicine of India. It was first used to keep the hair healthy.

A deeper interpretation suggests that Indian style head massage also offers the opportunity to get in touch with the healing potential within the individual's inner being. This empowers the recipient to ensure their own well-being.

The body’s natural balance is addressed and an Indian head massage should leave you with a feeling of inner peace and clarity.

How it may help
Massage may help with relieving anxiety and stress, help relaxation, aiding sleep, promoting a sense of well-being.

Contraindications
Please be aware that Indian Head Massage is contra-indicated in some conditions, for example, high blood pressure. The therapist will be happy to discuss this with you and advise you on where to go for more appropriate therapy if this is indicated.

If you are having any medical treatment when you visit it is useful to let your doctor know that you have decided to have Indian Head Massage so you receive the best care from everyone. The Centre will send a letter to your GP after the first consultation but this will only be done with your full permission.

A typical session

This is a very relaxing massage of the muscle covering the head, found to help with stress, anxiety and other problems. It uses deep thumb and finger pressure, friction, as well as a soothing laying on of hands. The shoulders, neck, arms, scalp and face are all included in the massage. This may help reduce muscular and nervous tension. The tissues of the neck and the shoulders are stretched and mobilised.

The first session will be around 1 - 1.5 hrs long to allow for a detailed case history to be taken.  Subsequent sessions are 1 hour long.  You will be positioned either on a chair or a couch for different parts of the massage.  Only the area being massaged will be exposed otherwise you will be covered with towels.

After the therapy you will be encouraged to drink more water for the next 24 hours.  During this time it is recommended that you avoid alcohol, tobacco and caffeine.

Cost / Number of sessions
Two to three sessions are recommended initially followed by further sessions at an agreed interval to maintain balance.
