Hopi Ear Candles - Overview

The use of ear candles is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many cultures. They were traditionally used by Shaman healers. Ancient wall paintings show their importance in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies. It is also believed that the Ancient Greeks used them, initially for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but much later on a purely physical level.

The practice reached the modern world via the Native American Hopi Indians, thereby giving the candles their name. The candles are still made today on the basis of the old traditional formula originating from the Hopi Indians and include a mixture of waxes, oils and herbs.

How it may help
Ear candles induce a revitalising heat upon the head and ears, which soothes, relieves and relaxes. The therapy may be helpful with:

  • Excessive or compacted wax in the ears.
  • Irritation in ears and sinuses.
  • Nose and throat congestion
  • Pressure regulation in cases of: sinusitis; rhinitis; glue ear; colds; flu;
  • headaches; migraine
  • Stimulation of local and reflex energy flow
  • Energetic revitalisation in cases of hearing impairment
  • Relaxing and calming effect in cases of stress
  • Noises in the ears, ringing, tinnitus
  • Vertigo and Dizziness
  • 'Swimmers ear'

Contraindications
It is advisable NOT to use Hopi Ear candles if:

  • The ear drum is perforated or has grommets in place
  • There is infection or inflammation
  • Skin diseases around the ear
  • Very occasionally allergic reaction to the ingredients of the candles. (If you suffer allergies please check ingredients with the practitioner before booking a treatment).

Most clients find the treatment relaxing and beneficial. Where long term conditions are being treated, the client may suffer from occasional popping shortly after treatment.

A typical session
A full case history is taken and a short examination of the ear canal is made using an auriscope. The treatment is administered while the client lies on their side, each candle takes approximately 10 – 15 minutes to burn down and are held in position by the therapist throughout.

The ear candles are hollow and cylindrical in shape and are made from pure natural ingredients - cotton beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St. Johns wort and camomile. The healing properties of the candle works as a chimney effect.  As the natural ingredients of the candle begin to vapourise, this vapour massages the external ear canal and the ear drum removing impurities from the external ear canal. This action also helps regulate the pressure systems within the head and is of great benefit to the sinuses.

A Hopi Ear Candle treatment is usually followed by a facial massage. If the client suffers from tinnitus, vertigo or sinusitis, a Bowen procedure may be used before the candling. The treatment plan will be discussed with the client after the case history has been taken. The whole treatment takes approximately 1 – 1.5 hours.

Cost / Number of sessions
Both ears will be treated at one session. One treatment is often sufficient to bring relief to many of the conditions mentioned above. However with some chronic conditions, treatment can be repeated within 3 - 7 days.
