Hopi Ear Candles - OverviewThe use of ear candles is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many cultures. They were traditionally used by Shaman healers. Ancient wall paintings show their importance in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies. It is also believed that the Ancient Greeks used them, initially for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but much later on a purely physical level. The practice reached the modern world via the Native American Hopi Indians, thereby giving the candles their name. The candles are still made today on the basis of the old traditional formula originating from the Hopi Indians and include a mixture of waxes, oils and herbs.
Most clients find the treatment relaxing and beneficial. Where long term conditions are being treated, the client may suffer from occasional popping shortly after treatment. The ear candles are hollow and cylindrical in shape and are made from pure natural ingredients - cotton beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St. Johns wort and camomile. The healing properties of the candle works as a chimney effect. As the natural ingredients of the candle begin to vapourise, this vapour massages the external ear canal and the ear drum removing impurities from the external ear canal. This action also helps regulate the pressure systems within the head and is of great benefit to the sinuses. A Hopi Ear Candle treatment is usually followed by a facial massage. If the client suffers from tinnitus, vertigo or sinusitis, a Bowen procedure may be used before the candling. The treatment plan will be discussed with the client after the case history has been taken. The whole treatment takes approximately 1 – 1.5 hours.
