Acupuncture for Stopping Smoking
Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture has been successfully used for many years in the treatment of addiction, to help with detoxification and to improve general well being.
How it may help
A combination of ear and body acupuncture may help. Ear acupuncture is used in addition to body acupuncture as often, underlying energetic imbalances make it difficult for people to give up smoking.
- Reduce cravings
- Reduce anxiety & stress
- Control appetite
- Clear cough & phlegm
- Increase will power
Contraindications Acupuncture has virtually no side effects. Occasionally, for 24 hours after treatment certain patients may experience tiredness, or headache or a slight worsening of symptoms. This is only a temporary reaction to treatment and is usually followed by an improvement in symptoms the following day.
Single use, pre-sterilised disposable needles are used so there is no risk of infection.
A typical session
Your first visit will take approximately 1 ½ hours. This is because a detailed case history needs to be taken to form a diagnosis and tailor an individualised treatment plan.
Your smoking habit will be discussed in detail to identify your behavioural triggers to smoking and devise short-time coping strategies.
A combination of ear and body acupuncture also supports your body’s recovery from the damage caused by smoking.
Ear acupuncture needles are left in place for 40 minutes, body needles for 20.
Cost / Number of sessions Acupuncture is not a ‘magic bullet’ for stopping smoking.
At least three treatments are recommended initially. As people respond differently to acupuncture, you may need more or less than three treatments.
After an initial problem has cleared up some people continue with treatment as a way of health maintenance and prevention. This would normally be monthly or six weekly.
The first session lasts approximately 1 ½ hours. Subsequent treatments last an hour.
